Upon your arrival in German y, there are certain important things to do after arriving in Germany.  If you are able to do these things immediately you arrive in Germany, it will be easier to cope with your stay in Germany without having to worry about losing your admission or being deported.

Below I’ll be showing you the important things to do after arriving in Germany.

Find Accommodation

The first and foremost important thing you need to do when you arriving in Germany is an international student is o look for an accommodation. The earlier you start looking for accommodation the better chance you stand to get an affordable accommodation, since the process of finding an accommodation as an international in Germany is the most hectic experience you would face when you first arrive Germany.

There are two options to go for when you seek an accommodation in Germany. The student hall and temporary private residence are the two options you can go with when you are looking for an accommodation in Germany.

Student Hall

Upon your arrival in Germany, or better still, before you arrive Germany, it is best you apply for a student hall accommodation if you wish to live in it. The student hall accommodation is the most affordable accommodation you can find in Germany, but due to its high in demand, it is hard to get a space.

Apart from its affordability, the student hall is well organized and managed by student service or union or student welfare organization.  The hall is also occupied by a lot of students which means you have the opportunity to make a lot of friends outside of your department or faculty. But the major disadvantage of a student hall is the lack of privacy. If privacy is of utmost importance to you and you have some more bucks to spend on accommodation, the student hall is not the ideal choice for you. You should try out the private residence.

Private Residence

If by any reason, you couldn’t get an accommodation in the student hall, a private residence is another option to try. There are two options to go with; Flatshare and Own Flat.

Both options have an edge over the student hall when it comes to privacy, though, the own flat option has more privacy. In flatshare, you are to share the flat with other students except that each of you will have personal room. But in own flat, you own the flat to yourself, which entails that you will pay more compared to other accommodation options.

Register Your Residence (Anmeldung)

Registering your residence is one of the most important things to do after arriving in Germany. In fact, your residence registration is the most important since it can either make or break your stay in Germany.

According to the law in Germany, the registration of your residence at the local Anmeldung must be completed after two weeks prior to your arrival in Germany. And if you fail to register your residence within the two weeks, you may be punished or worse deported back to your home country.

If you got a place in the student hall, you need to sign a contract after arriving in Germany and then the caretakers will give you the landlord’s confirmation of residence (known as Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) which is one of the mandatory documents needed for registering your place of residence (Anmeldung). But if you got a temporary residence, you will need to sign a rental contract (Mietvertrag) before collecting the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.  It is best you review the derails in the rental contract or if possible ask a German speaker to help you out with the information in the document so that you know what you are will be paying for.

Below are the documents required for the registration of your place of residence.

  • Your valid passport
  • Anmeldung (registration form)
  • Your rental contract (Mietvertrag)

After arriving in Germany, you’re going to need a bank account to pay rent, utilities, and make other payments and also receive your salary if you get to do part-time jobs.

Germany has the highest number of banks in Europe, which means you have numerous options to choose from. But on the other hand, deciding the best bank to open an account can be difficult because of the numerous numbers of banks available to choose from.

Within that period you need to enroll in person if you don’t want to be disqualified.
